Therapy services are provided through Gordonsville Counseling & Play Therapy, a private practice offering trauma-informed care for children, parents, and families.

Healing looks different at every stage of life.

My role is to meet you-or your child-exactly where you are, using approaches that are developmentally appropriate, trauma informed, and grounded in safety.

I work with children, teens, and women who are navigating trauma and emotional overwhelm. My approach integrates Play Therapy, EMDR, and relational, nervous system informed care to support healing in a way that feels contained and compassionate.

Therapy Services

Play therapy provides children with a safe, developmentally appropriate way to express feelings, process experiences, and build emotional regulation. Through play, children can communicate what may be difficult to put into words and begin to feel more secure, understood, and supported.

EMDR is a trauma-informed therapy that helps children, teens, and adults process distressing experiences that may still be impacting daily life. This approach supports the nervous system in integrating past experiences so they feel less overwhelming and more manageable in the present.

Parent support offers a space for caregivers to reflect, gain understanding, and build tools for supporting their child while also caring for themselves. This work focuses on strengthening the parent-child relationship, increasing confidence, and supporting regulation for both parent and child.

If you are considering therapy and would like to explore whether this feels like a good fit, I invite you to reach out and discuss the next steps.

My Approach

  • Therapy is not about pushing through or reliving pain without support.
    My approach emphasizes:

    • Safety and Titration

    • Collaboration

    • Respect for your nervous system

    • Developmentally appropriate care

Whether through play, conversation, or EMDR the work unfolds at a pace that feels manageable and supportive—always guided by what feels safest for you or your child.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I offer individual, parent/child, and family therapy sessions for children, teens and adults. I offer integrations of Play Therapy, trauma-informed care, and EMDR.

  • The first step is to make contact with me. I can walk you through the rest of the process. From there, we will discuss if I am a good fit for you and then schedule an intake appointment.

  • Unless your treatment plan involves family therapy or parent-child you will not be present in your child/teen(‘s) session.  You will need to wait in the lobby until the session has ended. I scheduled parent sessions separately from your child/teen’s individual sessions. Your child/teen may/may not be present during those sessions.

  • The play therapy room has a variety of toys that includes sand, water, paints, and markers.  Please bring your child in clothing that is comfortable and that you will not worry will become messy. At times, with consent, sessions are taken outside for nature walks, so children/teens need to dress for comfort.

  • Therapy is a process and the number of sessions will vary based on the problem you come to therapy with, the amount of time you spend working on changes outside of therapy, and the work you do outside of sessions.  Everyone responds to therapy differently, so throughout our sessions we will discuss yours or your child/teen’s progress and make decisions together about whether to continue sessions, refer for other services, or when to complete sessions.  Children and teens will be most successful when parents take an active role in the process. description

  • It’s important for you to prepare your child/teen for their first therapy session.  I encourage you to show them pictures from my website and talk openly with them before their session as this can help manage any uncertainty or anxiety they may be experiencing.

  • Your teen and I will discuss how we will communicate with you regarding their progress and goal setting.  My primary goal when I begin therapy with teens is to build trust, and meeting with parents “behind their back” is not a way to accomplish this.  When I consult with parents, I will not share specific details about sessions without your teen’s consent. However, if there are ever concerns regarding your teen’s safety, you will be the FIRST to know.

  • Payment can be made by cash, credit, or check made payable to Dayna Sykes, LPC.

All payments are made in full at the time of service.

  • I do not accept insurance. If your insurance offers “Out Of Network” benefits and you would like to use your insurance for billing, I can provide a “Superbill” for you to turn into your insurance company to receive a portion of the cost reimbursed to you. You must pay in full at the time of service.
